Yesterday I passed the last Power Platform certification that I was missing:

PL-600 Power Platform Solution Architect

Besides the official Microsoft Learn pages there are so many valuable community resources like Powerthon Sessions (Dynamics 365 Saturday), blog posts, certification courses, books or mind maps – many thanks to Julian SharpNeil ParkhurstJoe GriffinRory NearyScott DurowCarl Cookson and all the others who are sharing their knowledge with the community. 😀

Edit:

I am overwhelmed with the positive reactions, comments, and messages I have received in the last days to my LinkedIn post about reaching my certification goal. Many thanks to everyone, I really appreciate it – this is something so special about this community and I am happy and proud to be a part of it!

Therefore I will extend this post and try to answer a few of the questions that I have received on this blog or on LinkedIn.

Is there an exam or exam that I would recommend?

This is a question where I do not have an easy answer. The decision really depends on which role you are in and what you want to achieve with the certification. However, the fundamentals exams make sense if you are at the beginning of your journey, if you do not want technical on hand experience but an overview of the technology – or, as in my case, if you want to expand your knowledge to different topics that are related to your focus.

If you are not looking for a specific certification based on your current role – I would recommend the PL-100 App Maker and/or PL-200 Power Platform Functional Consultant certification. Regardless of whether you are in the Power Platform or Dynamics 365 area, everyone can benefit from the topics covered in these certifications to get a better understanding of the possibilities of the entire power platform, which is also the basis of Dynamics 365 CE applications.

How do I prepare for the exam?

There are different learning materials for different exams and certifications.

First, I recommend have a closer look to the topics covered in the exam that you want to take. Microsoft is providing this information directly on the exam page as well as the link to the specific Microsoft Learn learning paths which are recommended for to the exam or certification that you are going to apply.

Especially for the fundamental’s exams, Microsoft is offering virtual training days which are not only covering topics of the exam itself and therefore are a great opportunity to start the learning or recap what you have already learned – some of these virtual training days will provide you with a free exam voucher after participating the day.

Furthermore, there are lots of Dynamics 365 and Power Platform community members who regularly publish sessions in community events, meetups, or webinars as well as incredibly good written blog posts on specific topics.

Not to forget some books or online courses related to specific topics.

In my original post I just mentioned a few of the community members who regularly share their knowledge and where I joined sessions, online courses, bought a book or regularly visit the blog to stay informed.
And there are lots of more great community members who are regularly sharing their knowledge or organize complete deep dive courses or provide mentoring sessions.

I will write some additional blog posts about great community resources that I am constantly following for the past years.

But knowledge alone is not enough. Especially in case of more complex exams, the topics should have been applied in the system itself. And here, with the Power Platform Developer Plan, Microsoft offers a free opportunity to have a complete Power Platform environment with all the possibilities. And regarding Dynamics 365 CE applications you have the possibility to get free trials to test all topics for certifications.
